The Vought F4U-1 “Bird Cage” was the first production version of the iconic Corsair fighter. Featuring its distinctive frame-like cockpit canopy, this aircraft served with the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps during the early stages of the Pacific campaign in WWII. Its inverted gull wing design allowed for shorter, stronger landing gear while accommodating the huge propeller driven by a powerful 2,000hp Pratt & Whitney engine, making it the first U.S. fighter to surpass 400mph in level flight.

History

Introduced in 1942, the F4U-1 Bird Cage Corsair was designed to meet the U.S. Navy’s requirement for a fast, high-altitude carrier fighter. While initially challenging to land on carriers due to its long nose and torque, the Corsair found great success operating from land bases with Marine Corps units in the Pacific. It quickly proved itself as a formidable fighter and ground attack aircraft, excelling in dogfights and strafing runs. The Bird Cage variant remained in service until later Corsair versions with improved visibility and handling took over, but its combat record helped cement the Corsair’s legendary reputation.
