Tamiya Plastic Model Kit

Tamiya Vought F4U-1A Corsair (1/72)

The Vought F4U-1A Corsair was an improved version of the legendary F4U-1 Bird Cage, designed to address operational shortcomings identified in early combat. Retaining the distinctive inverted gull wing design and massive 2,000hp Pratt & Whitney radial engine, the F4U-1A introduced key refinements for carrier and land-based operations in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. These included a longer tailwheel leg to improve forward visibility, a new canopy for better all-round vision, and a small stall strip on the right wing’s leading edge to synchronise stall speeds between wings.

This 1/72 scale Tamiya kit faithfully captures the F4U-1A’s refined features, offering parts for different production stages of the variant. Builders can choose between propeller and tailwheel types, and equip the model with a 1,000lb bomb or external fuel tank for diorama versatility. High-quality decals provide three authentic WWII marking options.

  • Highly detailed 1/72 scale assembly kit of the F4U-1A Corsair
  • Includes options for early and late production details
  • Two propeller and tailwheel types included
  • Optional 1,000lb bomb or external fuel tank loadout
  • Cartograf decals for 3 different marking schemes

History

Introduced in 1942, the Corsair quickly proved itself as one of the fastest and most powerful carrier fighters of WWII, but early operational experience highlighted challenges in visibility and handling. The F4U-1A addressed these with structural changes and minor aerodynamic tweaks, making it more reliable for carrier landings and improving pilot situational awareness. Serving with both U.S. Navy and Marine Corps squadrons, the F4U-1A fought across the Pacific, excelling in air superiority and ground attack roles. Its ruggedness, speed, and firepower earned it a fearsome reputation among friend and foe alike.
