The M151A1 was an evolution of the original M151 MUTT (Military Utility Tactical Truck), widely deployed by the US military during the Cold War era. Introduced in 1964, it featured improvements such as a redesigned rear suspension and front-fender-mounted turn signals. Used by the US Army and Marine Corps from the Vietnam War through to the early 1990s, the M151A1 became a dependable light utility vehicle across various combat roles including reconnaissance, command, and field support.

Some variants were modified to carry the 106mm recoilless rifle or converted into light ambulances. Its compact design and durability made it especially effective in the dense and challenging terrain of Southeast Asia.
