History

In June 1941, Operation Barbarossa thrust the Soviet Union into a brutal war for survival. The Red Army’s infantry, often poorly equipped and hastily trained, faced the seasoned and well-equipped German Wehrmacht. Despite suffering heavy losses in the opening months, Soviet troops mounted fierce resistance, defending cities like Leningrad and Moscow through sheer determination. Early war Soviet infantry typically wore the M35 gymnastiorka tunic with pointed collar, and were armed with weapons such as the Mosin-Nagant rifle, Tokarev pistol, and the DP-27 Degtyaryov light machine gun. These soldiers fought under extreme conditions, forming the backbone of the Soviet defence and laying the groundwork for the counter-offensives that would come in later years.
