Tamiya Plastic Model Kit

Tamiya Spitfire Mk.Vb/Mk.Vb Trop. (1/72)

This 1/72 scale plastic kit from Tamiya faithfully recreates the legendary Spitfire Mk.Vb and its tropicalised counterpart, the Mk.Vb Trop. The model includes the option to build either version, with finely moulded parts that reflect the subtle differences between standard and desert-ready aircraft. The kit offers exceptional accuracy, with clean panel lines, well-proportioned components, and detailed cockpit features.

The Mk.Vb Trop variant includes the Vokes air filter unit fitted over the carburettor intake to shield against sand ingestion in North African conditions. Also included are options for clipped wingtips, desert-specific fittings, and historical decals representing RAF squadrons in the Mediterranean theatre. Whether you are building a Battle of Britain defender or a sand-worn veteran of El Alamein, this kit delivers realism and versatility.

  • 1/72 scale plastic assembly kit
  • Includes parts for standard Mk.Vb and tropicalised Mk.Vb Trop.
  • Vokes filter and clipped wingtip options
  • Detailed cockpit interior and landing gear
  • Decals for European and North African campaigns

History

First entering production in 1936, the Supermarine Spitfire became the iconic symbol of British air power during the Second World War. With more than 20,000 units produced by 1948, it saw service across multiple theatres and continuously evolved to counter new threats. The Mk.V series was the most numerous, with over 6,500 built. Among them, the Mk.Vb featured a powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin 45 engine, improved armament including two 20mm cannons and four machine guns, and enhanced agility.

To meet operational demands in harsh climates, the Mk.Vb Trop variant was introduced with tropical filters to protect its engine in desert conditions. These aircraft served in North Africa, the Mediterranean, and other overseas fronts, with modifications often field-designed to retain performance. Renowned for its balance of speed, firepower, and handling, the Spitfire Mk.Vb earned its place as a versatile and formidable fighter throughout the war.
