The USS Missouri (BB-63), the third Iowa-class battleship, was commissioned in 1944 and earned an enduring place in history as the site of Japan’s surrender on September 3, 1945, marking the end of World War II. She served in the Pacific during the final stages of the war, including operations at Kyushu, Okinawa, and Hokkaido. After the Korean War, Missouri entered reserve status until her 1986 modernisation, which saw the addition of advanced missile systems and updated electronics.
In 1991, Missouri played a key role in the Gulf War, launching Tomahawk cruise missiles during the opening strikes. Her blend of classic battleship firepower and modern technology made her a formidable presence in late 20th-century naval warfare.
