The King Tiger, officially designated Sd.Kfz. 182, entered service in 1944 and represented the peak of German heavy tank development. Although mechanically complex and produced in limited numbers, its combination of sloped armour and the long barreled 8.8cm KwK 43 gun made it extremely dangerous in combat. Vehicles saw action on both the Eastern and Western Fronts, earning a reputation for battlefield dominance when properly supported, despite reliability challenges in harsh conditions.
