History:

Mercenary Hoplites became a defining feature of Greek warfare in the classical and Hellenistic periods. As city-states declined and empires expanded, professional soldiers were in high demand—from the shores of Ionia to the campaigns of Philip II and Alexander the Great. These warriors often came from the same backgrounds as their citizen-soldier counterparts but fought for pay, not patriotism. Their equipment remained traditional: a round shield, spear, helmet, and varying forms of body armour. Whether defending a city or marching with Macedonian kings, Greek mercenaries were disciplined and deadly, and this Victrix set captures that versatility and martial character perfectly.
