History:

The McDonnell Douglas F-4C Phantom II was the United States Air Force’s initial version of the legendary Phantom, adapted from the Navy’s F-4B design. Introduced in the early 1960s, the F-4C marked a pivotal moment in jet fighter history, bringing exceptional speed, range, and payload capabilities to USAF tactical and strategic operations.

Equipped with twin J79 engines, the F-4C could exceed Mach 2 and carry a vast array of air-to-air and air-to-ground ordnance. While lacking an internal cannon in its early form, it proved formidable in missile engagements, and was later supplemented with external gun pods. The aircraft featured tandem seating for a pilot and weapons systems officer, both enclosed beneath a large canopy that provided excellent visibility.

The F-4C saw extensive combat during the Vietnam War, providing air superiority, ground attack, and escort support. Notably, it was among the first aircraft to engage in combat with North Vietnamese MiGs and participated in both Operation Rolling Thunder and Linebacker campaigns.
