History:
The F-4G Phantom II Wild Weasel V was the United States Air Force’s final dedicated variant of the legendary Phantom line, purpose-built for the dangerous Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD) mission. Converted from F-4E airframes, the F-4G featured a redesigned rear cockpit to house an electronic warfare officer (EWO) and was outfitted with specialised gear for detecting, jamming, and destroying radar installations.
Equipped with the AN/APR-38 and later AN/APR-47 radar warning and homing systems, along with ECM pods and anti-radiation missiles like the AGM-88 HARM, the F-4G could identify and engage enemy SAM sites with pinpoint accuracy. It became the backbone of USAF SEAD operations throughout the 1980s and early 1990s.
The F-4G flew in Operation Desert Storm and played a critical role in neutralising Iraqi air defences. By the mid-1990s, it was retired as the F-16CJ took over the SEAD role. Still, the F-4G remains one of the most iconic Wild Weasel aircraft in aviation history, respected for its capabilities, versatility, and effectiveness in one of the most hazardous missions in aerial warfare.
