History:
The general store was a cornerstone of small-town life across North America throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Serving as both a commercial hub and a social gathering place, these stores sold everything from foodstuffs and tools to clothing and mail-order goods. Often built of timber with a prominent front porch or overhanging signboard, general stores appeared in frontier towns, rural settlements, and along railway lines during the westward expansion. They frequently played a role in local politics, militia organisation, and even frontier justice.
