Academy A6M2 Zero Model 21 Rabaul Naval Aviation 1/48 Model Kit

The Academy Type 0 Model 21 Rabaul Naval Aviation (12381) is a 1/48 scale plastic model kit depicting the Imperial Japanese Navy’s A6M2 Zero fighter during the Second World War. This release focuses on Japanese naval aviation operations from Rabaul, an important forward air base in the South Pacific.

The kit includes four marking options, a canopy that can be assembled open or closed, and wingtips that can be positioned folded or extended. Paint masks for the canopy and propeller are also provided to assist with finishing.

The A6M2 Zero Model 21

The Type 0 Model 21, also designated A6M2, was an early version of the Japanese Zero carrier-based fighter. Introduced by the Imperial Japanese Navy in 1940, it became one of the most recognisable Japanese fighter aircraft of the Second World War.

The Zero played a major role in Japan’s early operations across the Pacific. Its association with Japanese naval aviation makes the Model 21 an important subject for modellers interested in the aircraft and campaigns of the early Pacific War.

Japanese Naval Aviation at Rabaul

Rabaul, located on the island of New Britain in the South Pacific, was captured by Japanese forces in early 1942. It subsequently became the Imperial Japanese Navy’s principal forward air base in the region.

Zero fighters formed the predominant aircraft type within the fighter component based at Rabaul. Their presence made the airfield an important centre of Japanese fighter operations during the Pacific War.

This Academy release represents the A6M2 Model 21 in the context of those Rabaul-based naval aviation operations, providing a specific historical setting for the completed aircraft.

Canopy and Wingtip Options

The kit offers two useful choices during assembly. The canopy can be fitted in either the open or closed position, allowing the modeller to select the appearance of the finished aircraft.

The wingtips can also be assembled folded or extended. This provides a choice between the aircraft’s folded-wingtip configuration and its full wingspan appearance.

These options allow different presentations of the same Zero Model 21 without changing the aircraft type represented.

Four Marking Options and Paint Masks

Academy includes a choice of four markings for the Rabaul Naval Aviation Zero, allowing the modeller to select an individual aircraft identity during finishing.

Paint masks are supplied for the canopy and propeller. These are useful when preparing the relevant areas for painting, particularly around the canopy glazing.
