Academy Plastic Model Kit

SB2U-3 Vindicator Battle of Midway (1/48) 12324

The Academy 1/48 SB2U-3 Vindicator kit reproduces the US Navy’s early carrier-based dive bomber as flown during the Battle of Midway. Featuring crisp mouldings, recessed panel lines, and accurate cockpit detail, this model captures an aircraft that played a crucial role in the early stages of the Pacific War despite being outclassed by newer designs.

  • 1/48 scale plastic model kit of the Vought SB2U-3 Vindicator
  • Detailed cockpit with crew positions and instrument panels
  • Authentic US Navy markings from the Battle of Midway
  • Optional bomb load and external stores included
  • Finely engraved surface detail and accurate airframe

This kit is ideal for WWII naval aviation enthusiasts, offering a chance to recreate a historically significant but often overlooked aircraft of the Midway campaign. Paint and cement are required and sold separately.

History:

The Vought SB2U Vindicator entered US Navy service in the late 1930s as the first monoplane dive bomber to operate from American carriers. By the time of the Battle of Midway in June 1942, the SB2U-3 was already outdated compared to the newer SBD Dauntless. Nevertheless, Marine Corps squadrons flying Vindicators took part in the battle, attacking Japanese forces in desperate attempts to stem the advance. Although they suffered heavy losses and achieved limited success, the crews displayed remarkable courage. The SB2U-3’s involvement at Midway highlights the transitional period of naval aviation, bridging the gap between pre-war designs and the modern carrier aircraft that would dominate the Pacific War.
