History:

The Curtiss SB2C Helldiver was the U.S. Navy’s primary carrier-based dive bomber in the latter years of World War II, replacing the SBD Dauntless. First deployed in 1943, the SB2C faced criticism for its handling but proved effective in delivering powerful strikes against Japanese ships and fortifications. The SB2C-4 variant introduced strengthened wings and enhanced payload capacity, making it well-suited for the intense Pacific campaigns. During Operation Iceberg, the invasion of Okinawa in April 1945, Helldivers flew from fleet carriers, attacking Japanese positions, shipping, and kamikaze airfields. Its service in this operation underscored its role as a vital strike aircraft during the final push of the Pacific War.
