US Avenger Pedestal Mounted Stinger (PMS) Turret (1/35)

This AFV Club kit builds a finely detailed 1/35 scale replica of the US Avenger PMS turret, the lightweight, pedestal-mounted launcher used to fire twin FIM-92 Stinger missiles. Designed for mounting on vehicles or fixed positions, the system provided rapid-reaction short-range air defence, and the open-frame structure of the real turret is well represented here with clean, sharply moulded components.

The kit captures the launcher arms, mounting brackets, control unit and sighting equipment with layered structural detail that gives the finished model a convincing technical appearance. The exposed framework suits careful painting and light weathering, while the compact footprint makes it an excellent addition to dioramas or as a mountable component on a compatible 1/35 vehicle.

History

The Pedestal Mounted Stinger, or PMS, was developed as a flexible short-range air-defence solution for forward-deployed US forces. By mounting twin Stinger launch tubes on a powered turret with integrated controls, crews could track and engage low-flying aircraft and helicopters more quickly and with greater accuracy than with shoulder-launched systems.

The PMS turret was used on a variety of platforms, including HMMWVs, static defensive positions and temporary installations during deployments. It represented an important step in improving mobility and responsiveness for MANPADS-based air defence, forming the basis for later, more advanced systems such as the Avenger vehicle-mounted launcher.
