Airfix Plastic Model Kit
SR.N4 Hovercraft (1/144)
This 1/144 scale kit from Airfix represents the SR.N4 hovercraft, also known as the Mountbatten Class, one of the most distinctive transport designs of the late twentieth century. Developed by Saunders Roe and later the British Hovercraft Corporation, the SR.N4 transformed cross-Channel travel with its high-speed amphibious capability. As part of the 1/144 plastic kit range, it offers a detailed subject with strong historical relevance.
Comprising 276 parts, the model captures the unique structure of the SR.N4, including its large deck, skirted base, and prominent pylon-mounted propellers. The kit features detailed representations of the four Rolls Royce Proteus turboprop engines, along with the large diameter propellers that provided both lift and directional control. The amphibious design is also reflected in the inclusion of powered fins and rudder details.
The model includes two paint schemes representing operational hovercraft, allowing for different display options. Its size and distinctive layout make it a standout piece once assembled, particularly when compared to more conventional aircraft or ship models. The level of detail and part count make it suitable for those looking for a more involved build.

The SR.N4 hovercraft entered service in 1969 and quickly became an iconic part of cross-Channel transport. Capable of speeds exceeding 60 knots, it allowed passengers to travel between the UK and mainland Europe far more quickly than traditional ferries. Its ability to operate on both land and water meant it could use specially designed terminals rather than conventional ports. At the time of its introduction, it was the largest passenger hovercraft ever built, powered by four Rolls Royce Proteus engines driving massive propellers. Although eventually replaced by more conventional transport methods, the SR.N4 remains a notable example of British engineering innovation during the Cold War period, and this model reflects that legacy in detailed form.
