History
The BMW E21 3 Series, introduced in the mid-1970s, marked the beginning of one of the most successful model lines in automotive history. Its combination of compact size, rear-wheel drive layout, and balanced handling made it well suited for both road and competition use.
In motorsport, the E21 was developed into a competitive touring car, taking part in the Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft (DRM), one of the most prominent racing series in Germany during the late 1970s and early 1980s. These races featured a mix of highly modified production-based cars competing across demanding circuits.
Drivers such as Hans-Joachim Stuck achieved notable success with the BMW 320i, securing multiple victories during the 1980 season. His performances helped establish the car as a serious contender in the championship, demonstrating its capability against strong competition.
The success of the E21 in racing contributed to BMW’s reputation for producing performance-focused vehicles. Today, it is remembered as an important step in the evolution of the 3 Series, as well as a significant presence in the history of touring car racing.
