History:

The Panzer IV, often referred to as the “workhorse of the German Army”, was the only German tank to remain in production throughout the entirety of World War II. Originally intended to support infantry while the Panzer III tackled enemy armour, the Panzer IV evolved into Germany’s primary medium tank by 1942. With successive upgrades, especially in firepower and protection, it held its own against increasingly formidable Allied tanks.

The Ausf. H variant, introduced in 1943, was the most produced version of the Panzer IV. It featured enhanced armour with a single-piece 80mm frontal plate and solid steel Schürzen skirts on both the hull and turret. These side skirts, 5mm thick on the hull and 8mm on the turret, were designed to defend against Soviet anti-tank rifles. Additional refinements included the adoption of the long-barrelled 75mm KwK 40 L/48 gun, which made it capable of engaging heavier enemy tanks effectively.

With over 3,700 Ausf. H units built, this version represented the peak of Panzer IV development. The platform also served as the basis for various other military vehicles, including anti-aircraft systems and recovery vehicles, owing to its reliable leaf spring suspension and spacious hull layout. The Panzer IV remains one of the most recognisable and historically significant tanks of World War II.
