History
The Russian Maxim machine gun, officially adopted in 1910, was a water-cooled, belt-fed weapon based on Hiram Maxim’s original design. It became a mainstay of the Imperial Russian Army during World War I, mounted on wheeled Sokolov carriages and used extensively in defensive and offensive operations. Ammunition was stored in sturdy wooden and metal boxes, each holding cloth belts of cartridges ready for rapid deployment. These boxes were critical not only for transportation but also for protecting ammunition from dirt and moisture in the often harsh conditions of the Eastern Front. The Maxim’s reliability, combined with disciplined crews and well-supplied ammunition, made it one of the most feared weapons of its time, and its accessories remain a point of interest for historians and modellers alike.
