History

The Mitsubishi A6M Zero entered service in 1940 and quickly established itself as one of the finest carrier-based fighters of the early Second World War. The improved A6M5 Type 52 variant appeared in 1943 with redesigned wings, revised exhausts and enhanced performance, making it better suited to counter increasingly capable Allied fighters. Although later Allied aircraft gradually gained the advantage, the Zero remained the backbone of the Imperial Japanese Navy’s fighter force until the end of the war. Its exceptional manoeuvrability, long range and distinctive appearance have made it one of the most iconic combat aircraft in aviation history.
