Hasegawa 1/48 Aichi D3A1 Type 99 Val Model 11

This limited-edition Hasegawa 1/48 Aichi D3A1 Type 99 Val Model 11 kit represents Japanese aircraft involved in the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. It includes photo-etched parts that allow the main wings to be modelled in the folded position and the cowl flaps to be displayed open.

Two aircraft marking options are provided, covering both the first and second attack waves. The featured second-wave aircraft is “AII-256” from the aircraft carrier Kaga, piloted by Shinsaku Yamakawa. An alternative set of decals represents “EI-238” from the aircraft carrier Shokaku during the first attack wave.

Photo-Etched Folding Wing Details

The included photo-etched components are used for the main wing folding sections and cowl flaps. These parts provide the option of displaying the Val with its wings folded, giving the completed model a distinctly different configuration from an aircraft shown with its wings fully extended.

The cowl flaps can also be reproduced in the open position using the supplied etched parts. These features are specific to this limited-edition release and form an important part of the kit’s Pearl Harbor subject.

Two Pearl Harbor Marking Options

The decals provide a choice between two aircraft from December 1941. “AII-256” took part in the second attack wave from the aircraft carrier Kaga and was piloted by Shinsaku Yamakawa. This aircraft also carries the Hokoku-522, All Japan Schoolgirls identification.

The second option is “EI-238”, an aircraft from the carrier Shokaku flown by Major Kakuichi Takahashi during the first attack wave on Pearl Harbor.
