The Hasegawa F-8E Crusader is a highly detailed 1/72 scale plastic model kit of one of the United States Navy’s most successful carrier-based supersonic fighters. Nicknamed “The Last of the Gunfighters”, the F-8 Crusader combined outstanding speed, manoeuvrability and heavy cannon armament, making it one of the most effective naval fighters of the Cold War.

History

The Vought F-8 Crusader entered United States Navy service in 1957 as the Navy’s first operational supersonic fighter capable of exceeding Mach 1 in level flight. The improved F-8E variant introduced upgraded radar, enhanced avionics and expanded air-to-ground capability while retaining the aircraft’s exceptional dogfighting performance. Armed with four 20mm cannons alongside Sidewinder missiles, the Crusader earned its nickname “The Last of the Gunfighters”. During the Vietnam War it achieved an impressive air combat record against North Vietnamese MiGs while also carrying out escort, reconnaissance and ground attack missions. The Crusader remained in frontline U.S. Navy service until the mid-1970s and continued serving with several other nations for many years afterwards.
