Hasegawa Plastic Model Kit

Yamaha YZR500 (0W98) 1988 WGP500 Champion (1/12) 21503

This 1/12 scale plastic model kit from Hasegawa accurately recreates the Yamaha YZR500 (0W98), the machine that carried Eddie Lawson to his third World Championship title in the 1988 500cc Grand Prix season. The kit is based on detailed research of the real motorcycle and reflects the steady evolution of the 0W98 throughout the season.

The model captures key technical features such as the high-rigidity frame and distinctive U-shaped swingarm. Hasegawa has designed the parts breakdown to balance fine detail with straightforward assembly, making it an enjoyable build while still delivering an authentic representation of this iconic racing motorcycle.

A notable feature of the kit is the choice of front suspension. Builders can select between the upright front fork used on the early 0W98 or the inverted front fork fitted to later machines from the ninth round onwards. A race stand is also included, allowing the completed model to be displayed in a paddock-style setting.

  • Includes race stand
  • High-detail frame, swingarm, and engine representation

History

The Yamaha YZR500 0W98 represents the pinnacle of two-stroke Grand Prix racing during the late 1980s. In 1988, Eddie Lawson delivered one of the most dominant seasons in 500cc history, securing his third world title aboard this machine. The bike was continuously refined during the season, improving rigidity and handling while retaining the brutal power delivery that defined the era.

The 1988 championship marked the final world title of Lawson’s career and cemented the YZR500’s reputation as one of the most successful and technically advanced GP motorcycles of its time. Today, the 0W98 is remembered as a defining symbol of the golden age of 500cc Grand Prix racing.
