First adopted by the Soviet Army in 1946, the DShKM is a modernized evolution of the DShK heavy machine gun. Renowned for its power, reliability, and adaptability, this weapon became a staple in military arsenals worldwide. Its 19.2 kJ muzzle energy and high rate of fire made it effective against lightly armoured vehicles, especially when paired with B-32 armour-piercing incendiary rounds—capable of penetrating 20mm of armour at up to 500 metres. Initially developed for anti-aircraft roles, the DShKM was later adopted for ground support and vehicle mounting across a wide range of military equipment.

Used extensively during the Cold War and into the 21st century, the DShKM continues to serve in modern militaries—including the Armed Forces of Ukraine, where it is deployed on infantry mounts and vehicles, and even used in counter-drone applications.
