History:

The Sikorsky S-64E Skycrane is a civilian adaptation of the CH-54A Tarhe, a heavy-lift helicopter first introduced during the Vietnam War. While the CH-54A served primarily with the U.S. Army, lifting artillery, boats, and even downed aircraft, the S-64E became indispensable in civilian roles. Its capabilities include firefighting, search and rescue, construction, timber harvesting, and heavy cargo transport. The helicopter’s distinctive design includes a three-seat cockpit with a rear-facing operator who monitors cargo loads through a transparent panel. Many S-64Es were given personalised names painted on their nose, adding to their character. Over its service life, the aircraft set aviation records for climb rate and altitude, including achieving horizontal flight at 11 kilometres. Today, the Skycrane remains a workhorse in heavy-lift aviation, demonstrating both versatility and engineering excellence.
