Italeri Plastic Model Kit

Italeri MC.202 Folgore (1/48) 2840

The Italeri MC.202 Folgore is a detailed 1/48 scale plastic model kit of the streamlined Italian fighter used during the Second World War. Developed with completely new moulds, the kit recreates the elegant lines and distinctive features of one of the Regia Aeronautica’s most capable wartime aircraft.

The model includes a comprehensive decal sheet, three-dimensional decals and a photo-etched fret for refining smaller components. These multimedia details provide additional definition across the cockpit, exterior and other prominent areas of the aircraft. The kit has been developed under licence from Aeronautica Militare.

Once assembled, the model measures approximately 18.4 cm long. Its combination of new tooling and supplementary detail parts provides a strong basis for careful painting, weathering and display as part of an Italian aviation collection or a wider Second World War scene.

History

The Macchi MC.202 Folgore represented a major improvement for the fighter units of the Regia Aeronautica. Its streamlined airframe was combined with the German-designed Daimler-Benz DB 601 inline engine, produced under licence by the Italian aviation industry. This powerplant gave the aircraft a considerable performance advantage over earlier Italian fighters powered by radial engines.

Fast and manoeuvrable, the MC.202 could reach approximately 600 km/h and was capable of meeting contemporary Allied fighters on more equal terms. Its aerodynamic design and improved engine distinguished it from aircraft such as the Fiat G.50 and Macchi MC.200, both of which belonged to the preceding generation of Italian fighters.

Early versions were armed with two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns mounted in the nose. Although reliable, this armament was relatively light compared with that carried by many opposing fighters. Later versions therefore received additional weapons to improve their effectiveness in aerial combat against British and American aircraft.

Glue and paints are sold separately.
