History

The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was one of the largest and most heavily armed single-engine fighters of the Second World War. Powered by the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine, it combined exceptional durability with impressive speed and firepower. During the 1944 campaign for Saipan in the Mariana Islands, P-47D aircraft provided bomber escort, close air support and ground attack missions against Japanese forces. Its rugged construction enabled it to absorb heavy battle damage and return safely to base, earning the Thunderbolt a reputation as one of the most effective Allied fighters of the war.
