History

The Panzerkampfwagen III was developed during the late 1930s as Germany’s primary medium tank, intended to engage enemy armour while the Panzer IV provided infantry support. Early variants such as the Ausf. B and Ausf. D served during training and the opening campaigns of the Second World War, including the invasions of Poland and France. Although lightly armed and relatively thinly armoured compared with later versions, these early vehicles helped shape German armoured warfare doctrine and provided valuable operational experience that influenced the development of more capable Panzer III variants used throughout the war.
