History
The Raupenschlepper Ost, commonly abbreviated to RSO, was developed by Germany during the Second World War in response to the severe mud and snow conditions encountered on the Eastern Front. Conventional wheeled vehicles often struggled in these environments, leading to the need for a reliable fully tracked transport vehicle.
The RSO/01 combined a simple mechanical layout with excellent off-road mobility, allowing it to transport supplies, ammunition, and personnel through terrain that immobilised many other vehicles. Its compact size and rugged design made it particularly effective during harsh winter conditions.
Late production versions introduced various simplifications and modifications intended to speed up wartime manufacturing while maintaining operational effectiveness. The vehicle served in logistics, artillery towing, and supply roles across multiple fronts.
The Raupenschlepper Ost became one of the most recognisable German support vehicles of the war and remains closely associated with the extreme environmental conditions faced during operations on the Eastern Front.
