This 1/35 scale Tamiya model kit reproduces the VW Kubelwagen Type 82 Africa Version, adapted for the harsh desert conditions of the North African campaign during WWII. Originally designed by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche as a civilian vehicle, the Kubelwagen was quickly pressed into military service. The lightweight monocoque body, torsion bar suspension, and air-cooled 985cc engine delivering 23.5hp made it highly reliable and easy to repair, especially in extreme climates.

For desert service, the Africa Version was fitted with wide Continental balloon tyres, available in grooved or ungrooved versions, to improve performance on sand. A raised spare tyre mount was added to accommodate the larger tyres. These vehicles were widely used by Wehrmacht units in communications and liaison roles, and some continued service in Italy after the North African campaign ended in May 1943.
