The SU-76M was a lightweight, open-topped self-propelled gun used extensively by the Soviet Union in World War II. Based on a modified T-70 light tank chassis, it was armed with a 76.2mm ZiS-3 gun and provided vital infantry support on the Eastern Front. Its simple design and mass production made it one of the most common Soviet armoured vehicles of the war.

History

The SU-76M emerged in 1943 as a response to the Red Army’s need for a versatile, mobile fire support vehicle. Built using many of the same components as the T-70 light tank, it offered ease of production and straightforward maintenance. The vehicle’s 76.2mm ZiS-3 gun was effective against infantry, fortifications, and light armour. Despite limited armour protection, especially due to its open fighting compartment, the SU-76M proved invaluable in urban warfare and mobile operations. Its lightweight design allowed it to traverse soft ground that heavier tanks could not. Over 14,000 units were produced, and it remained in service through the end of the war and beyond in Soviet-aligned nations.
