Thunder Model Plastic Model Kit
Thunder Model US Heavy Wrecker Ward LaFrance M1000 (1/35) 35009
This 1/35 scale kit from Thunder Model recreates the US Army’s Ward LaFrance M1000 Series 1 Heavy Wrecker, one of the earliest iterations of the iconic 10-ton 6×6 recovery vehicle used in World War Two. Built in 1941, only 69 units of Series 1 were produced, featuring a simpler layout than later models—no rear winch, but a hand-operated crane boom and pulley system, with the spare wheels mounted crosswise behind the cab. These trucks were factory-finished in olive drab and equipped with 11.25-20 tyres.
- Highly detailed static model in 1/35 scale
- Includes 580 plastic parts over 7 sprues
- 8 clear parts and photo-etched details
- 8 resin 3D printed parts
- Scale ropes and chains included
- Marking options with decals provided
The kit accurately captures the Series 1 variant’s unique features including the gear-driven front winch, hand-cranked crane, and early war configuration. A rewarding build for any military vehicle enthusiast or historical modeller.
Note: This model kit requires assembly and painting. Glue, paints and tools are not included and must be purchased separately.

History:
The Ward LaFrance M1000 was developed in response to the US military’s need for a heavy-duty recovery vehicle during the early stages of World War Two. The Series 1 variant, introduced in 1941, retained a commercial cab design and simplified equipment compared to later series. Built in limited numbers—just 69 units—the Series 1 was an important stepping stone in standardising military recovery operations. With a Continental 6-cylinder engine and gear-driven front winch, the Series 1 laid the groundwork for the later, more sophisticated M1A1 and M1A2 models. Though basic in layout, it served vital roles in battlefield logistics, helping retrieve immobilised or damaged vehicles under harsh conditions.
