UMa Model AV-8B Harrier II PLUS VMA-542 “Tigers” Squadron (1/48) D1003

The UMa Model AV-8B Harrier II PLUS VMA-542 “Tigers” Squadron is a premium 1/48 scale plastic model kit recreating one of the United States Marine Corps’ most capable Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) attack aircraft. This special edition represents an aircraft from VMA-542 “Flying Tigers” in its striking post-2000 operational scheme, complete with the distinctive Chinese character for “Tiger” painted on the nose.

Designed with exceptional attention to detail, the kit features finely recessed panel lines, crisp rivet detail and accurately reproduced raised rivets that closely match the full-size aircraft. Advanced slide moulding technology has been used to produce seamless engine exhaust nozzles and gun pods, reducing assembly work while delivering an authentic appearance.

The kit provides multiple construction options, including alternative intake configurations with either the auxiliary blow-in doors closed or deployed open. High-quality pre-cut masking sheets simplify painting, while the included photo-etched parts enhance fine details such as the HUD frame, rear-view mirrors and intake grilles. Premium Cartograf decals provide sharp, accurate markings for the VMA-542 “Tigers” aircraft.

An extensive selection of modern weapons is included, allowing the Harrier to be displayed in a variety of operational configurations. Ordnance includes GBU-12 laser-guided bombs, AGM-65 Maverick missiles, AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles and a Litening targeting pod, making this one of the most comprehensively equipped Harrier kits currently available.

History

The AV-8B Harrier II PLUS is an advanced development of the famous Harrier family, combining vertical and short take-off capability with modern avionics, radar and precision-guided weapon systems. Operated by the United States Marine Corps, it provides close air support, battlefield interdiction and fleet defence from both land bases and amphibious assault ships. Marine Attack Squadron VMA-542, known as the “Flying Tigers”, flew the Harrier II PLUS in a variety of training and operational deployments. Their distinctive aircraft markings, including the Chinese character for “Tiger”, made the squadron one of the most recognisable Harrier operators of the Modern era.
