Victrix Plastic Model Figures

Rome’s Legions of the Republic (I) (28mm) VXA007

This 28mm hard plastic set from Victrix represents Rome’s Republican legions during the early and middle periods of the Roman Republic. The box includes 60 highly detailed miniatures, portraying legionaries in chainmail alongside light infantry skirmishers—perfect for recreating engagements from the Punic Wars to the Macedonian campaigns.

The figures can be built as Hastati or Princeps equipped with pila, or as Triarii armed with long spears. You’ll also find command elements including Centurions, standard bearers, and optional musicians. The set includes 18 light infantry figures which can be assembled as Velites (after 211 BCE) or earlier Leves skirmishers, with options for helmeted or unarmoured heads depending on historical context.

These miniatures are suitable for battles against Pyrrhos of Epeiros, Carthaginian forces in the 1st and 2nd Punic Wars, and Rome’s eastern campaigns against Macedonian and Hellenistic opponents, as well as tribal foes like Gauls, Iberians, and Numidians.

History:

During the early Republic, Rome’s military evolved from a phalanx-based force into the more flexible manipular legion. The period saw bitter conflicts against Pyrrhos of Epeiros, Hannibal of Carthage, and the Hellenistic kingdoms of Macedonia. Roman soldiers were divided into classes by age and experience—Hastati and Princeps formed the main battle line, while Triarii acted as seasoned reserves. Light troops like Velites and Leves provided skirmish support with javelins. The introduction of chainmail, known as lorica hamata, improved protection without sacrificing mobility. This Victrix set captures the formation of Rome’s legendary military machine as it laid the groundwork for centuries of conquest.
