History
The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II first entered service in the late 1950s and became one of the most successful and versatile jet fighters of the Cold War period. Originally developed for the United States Navy, the aircraft was later adopted by the Marine Corps, United States Air Force, and many international operators.
The F-4J variant introduced improved radar systems, upgraded avionics, and enhanced combat capability compared to earlier models. Marine Corps squadrons used the Phantom II in both fleet defence and ground attack roles, particularly during operations in Southeast Asia.
Powered by two General Electric J79 turbojet engines, the Phantom II combined high speed, heavy armament, and long operational range. It was capable of carrying a wide variety of missiles, bombs, and external fuel tanks, making it adaptable to many mission profiles.
The F-4 Phantom II remained in front-line service for decades and earned a reputation as one of the defining combat aircraft of the Cold War era, serving with distinction across numerous conflicts and military operations worldwide.
