History

The Kawasaki Ki-100 was developed during the closing stages of WWII after production problems with the liquid-cooled Ki-61 Hien left completed airframes without engines. Engineers successfully adapted the design to accept the Mitsubishi Ha-112-II radial engine, creating an aircraft that proved lighter, more reliable and highly manoeuvrable. The Ki-100-I Otsu entered service in 1945 and quickly gained a reputation as one of Japan’s finest piston-engined fighters. Despite being introduced too late and in limited numbers to influence the outcome of the war, it was respected by both Japanese pilots and Allied opponents for its excellent handling and combat performance.
