History:

The Kawasaki Ki-45 Kai Tei “Toryu” (Nick) was one of Imperial Japan’s primary twin-engine heavy fighters during World War II. Originally designed as a long-range escort, it found its niche as a night fighter and ground attack aircraft. The Toryu, meaning “Dragon Slayer,” proved especially valuable in the defence of the Japanese homeland during the latter stages of the war.

Equipped with a powerful pair of Nakajima Ha-102 radial engines and heavily armed with a mix of nose-mounted machine guns and underbelly cannons, the Ki-45 was capable of engaging both bomber formations and ground targets. Several versions were adapted for different roles, including night interception, where they hunted American B-29s using upward-firing oblique guns.

The Ki-45 featured a distinctive tandem cockpit, long fuselage, and sleek profile. While outclassed in speed by later Allied fighters, it compensated with firepower and endurance. Toryus saw extensive service from China and Southeast Asia to the Japanese home islands.
