Airfix Avro Shackleton AEW.2 / MR.2 1/72 Model Kit

Build one of the Royal Air Force’s distinctive Cold War aircraft with the Airfix Avro Shackleton AEW.2 / MR.2 in 1/72 scale. With a completed wingspan of 508mm, the Shackleton makes an impressive addition to a 1/72 aircraft collection. Rated at skill level 3 and suitable for modellers aged 8 and above, the kit provides a detailed project with three genuine aircraft paint schemes to choose from.

Avro Shackleton Maritime Patrol Aircraft

Developed from a lineage that included the famous Avro Lancaster, the Shackleton entered RAF service in 1951 as a long-range maritime patrol aircraft. Anti-submarine warfare was one of its primary roles, although the type also undertook a variety of other duties during its lengthy RAF career.

Most Shackletons were powered by Rolls-Royce Griffon engines, and the aircraft became the final four-engined propeller-driven bomber or strike type to serve with the Royal Air Force.

Build the AEW.2 or MR.2

The kit allows you to choose between two significant Shackleton versions. The MR.2 represents the aircraft in its maritime patrol role, while the AEW.2 reflects its later airborne early warning service.

Following the decommissioning of HMS Ark Royal, radar equipment from former AEW Fairey Gannets was installed in twelve Shackleton airframes. These aircraft became the AEW Mk.2 and served with No.8 Squadron at RAF Lossiemouth until the squadron was disbanded in 1991.
