Fairey Gannet Naval Aircraft

The Fairey Gannet became one of the Royal Navy’s most unusual carrier-based aircraft, combining a distinctive appearance with turboprop power. In the summer of 1950, a Gannet became the first turboprop-powered aircraft to land on the deck of an aircraft carrier, marking an important point in naval aviation development.

Production of the AS.1, the most widely manufactured Gannet variant, began in 1954. The aircraft went on to serve beyond the Royal Navy, with Gannets also operated by the navies of Australia, West Germany and Indonesia. The Royal Navy was the final operator to retire active examples.
