History

In 1984 Porsche entered three specially prepared four-wheel-drive 911 Carrera 3.2 cars into the Paris-Dakar Rally. Known internally as the Type 953, these machines were developed to test technology that would later appear on the Porsche 959. Driven by René Metge and co-driver Dominique Lemoyne, the winning car demonstrated exceptional speed, durability and reliability across more than 11,000 kilometres of demanding terrain, securing overall victory against purpose-built off-road rivals. The achievement remains one of Porsche’s greatest motorsport successes and established the foundation for the company’s later Dakar-winning programmes.
