History
World War I German naval pilots operated from coastal seaplane bases and specially adapted warships, flying missions over the North Sea, Baltic Sea, and other contested waters. Their duties included reconnaissance, anti-submarine patrols, and engaging enemy shipping and aircraft. Flight over open water presented unique hazards, making life vests and survival equipment essential. These pilots played a crucial role in naval operations, providing the Imperial German Navy with vital intelligence and extending its reach far beyond traditional surface fleet capabilities.
