History
The Westland Puma HC.1 is a military transport helicopter developed for the Royal Air Force, based on the French Aérospatiale SA 330 Puma. Introduced into service in the early 1970s, it was designed for troop transport, logistics, and battlefield support roles.
The aircraft proved versatile and reliable, serving in a wide range of environments and operations. It was used extensively during the Northern Ireland conflict and later saw service in the Gulf War, where its ability to operate in demanding conditions was put to the test.
Over the years, the Puma underwent various upgrades to extend its service life and improve performance. Despite being replaced by newer platforms, it remained in use for decades due to its adaptability and proven design.
The Puma HC.1 represents an important part of RAF helicopter operations, with a long service history across multiple theatres and missions.
