The Sherman IC Firefly was Britain’s answer to the German heavy tanks of WWII. By rearming standard Sherman tanks supplied through the Lend-Lease programme with the powerful 17-pounder gun, British forces gained a weapon capable of defeating a Tiger I’s frontal armour at over 1,000 metres. The conversion, most often based on the M4A4 (Sherman V) but also applied to the M4 (Sherman I), played a vital role in Allied armoured operations from the Normandy landings through the final offensives in Europe.
