1/72 Scale Aircraft Kits for Modellers

1/72 Scale Aircraft Model Kits

Build historic aircraft, modern jets and helicopters with 1/72 scale model aircraft kits from established manufacturers. This popular scale combines compact finished dimensions with enough surface and cockpit detail for careful painting, decals and weathering.

The range includes kits from Airfix, Tamiya, Italeri, Academy, Eduard, Arma Hobby, Dora Wings, IBG Models, ICM, Special Hobby, Hobby 2000 and PM Model. With varied aircraft types, nations and periods represented, 1/72 is well suited to individual builds, themed collections and multi-aircraft displays.

Historic 1/72 Aircraft Models

Historic military subjects include recognisable fighters and attack aircraft such as the Supermarine Spitfire, Hawker Hurricane, Mitsubishi A6M2b Zero, Boulton Paul Defiant and Messerschmitt Me 410A-1. Other represented subjects include the Westland Lysander and Hawker Sea Fury.

Several kits provide a choice of format as well as aircraft. Airfix offers standard releases and starter sets, while Arma Hobby’s Hurricane Mk I is represented as an Expert Set. IBG Models also offers a Spitfire Mk.I and Mk.II Black Box edition.

Cold War and Modern Aircraft Kits

The 1/72 scale also covers later aircraft, including the English Electric Lightning F2A, Avro Vulcan B.2 Black Buck, Jaguar GR.1/GR.3 RAF and Grumman F-14D Tomcat. Contemporary subjects include the Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II and a Ukrainian Air Forces MiG-29.

This breadth makes it possible to build aircraft with very different roles and outlines at a consistent scale, from compact fighters to larger bombers and modern combat aircraft.

1/72 Helicopter Model Kits

Rotary-wing subjects are represented alongside fixed-wing aircraft. Examples include the Boeing Chinook HC.1 and Westland Wessex HC.2, adding another aircraft type to a 1/72 collection while retaining the same scale relationship.

Choosing a 1/72 Aircraft Kit

Begin by selecting the period, nation or aircraft role that interests you, then compare the kit format and included subject. Starter sets provide one route into the scale, while standard and specialist editions offer further choices for established aircraft modellers.

The compact nature of 1/72 makes it practical to display several related aircraft together. A collection can be organised around a particular air force, theatre, manufacturer, aircraft family or historical period while keeping every completed model at a consistent scale.
