History:
The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23, NATO reporting name “Flogger,” was developed in the late 1960s as a successor to the MiG-21. The MiG-23S was the first production version, featuring variable-geometry wings that allowed improved take-off, landing, and supersonic performance. Armed with radar-guided missiles and a 23mm cannon, it was designed as an interceptor to counter advanced Western fighters. While early versions like the MiG-23S suffered from limited avionics and handling issues, later variants became more capable multirole fighters. The MiG-23 served with the Soviet Air Force and numerous allies, seeing combat in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, and left a lasting impression as one of the most widely exported swing-wing fighters of the Cold War.
