History: The M551 Sheridan was developed as a lightweight, air-deployable tank for U.S. forces, entering service in the late 1960s. Although first combat-tested in Vietnam, the Sheridan continued to serve into the 1990s. During the Gulf War, the 82nd Airborne Division deployed Sheridans for reconnaissance and support roles, where their mobility and firepower were valuable despite the tank’s age. The Gulf War marked the last major combat deployment of the M551 before it was gradually phased out of service.
