History:
After Israel declared independence in 1948, the newly formed IDF sought a reliable and adaptable tank platform, turning to surplus M4 Shermans from various sources. By the mid-1950s, these tanks were upgraded with the 76.2mm M1 gun and became known as the M1 Super Sherman. Retaining the Sherman’s curved cast hull and radial gasoline engine, these vehicles were capable of taking on modern threats such as the Soviet-supplied T-34-85. The M1 Super Sherman first saw combat during the 1956 Suez Crisis and continued to serve into the early 1970s. Its success laid the foundation for later Israeli armoured innovations and remains a key chapter in the evolution of IDF armour.
