History
The Grumman F-14A Tomcat entered service in 1974 as the US Navy’s premier fleet defence fighter. Designed to intercept Soviet bombers and cruise missiles at long range, the Tomcat was equipped with the powerful AWG-9 radar and capable of carrying the AIM-54 Phoenix missile, giving it unmatched reach for its time. VF-84 “Jolly Rogers,” one of the Navy’s most famous squadrons, became synonymous with the Tomcat and its skull-and-crossbones tail markings. VF-24 “Fighting Renegades” also distinguished itself with Tomcat operations during the late Cold War. The F-14A served with distinction until retired from US service in 2006, cementing its status as one of the most iconic jet fighters in aviation history.
