History
The McDonnell-Douglas F/A-18 Hornet was introduced in the late 1970s as a multirole combat aircraft for the US Navy and Marine Corps. The A+ variant, an upgraded version of the F/A-18A, received structural improvements and avionics updates to extend its service life. VMFA-232, known as the “Red Devils,” is the oldest and most decorated active fighter squadron in the Marine Corps, with a history dating back to World War I. During the jet era, the squadron flew the Hornet extensively, participating in operations around the globe including the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan. The F/A-18A+ provided vital strike and air defence capabilities, reinforcing the Hornet’s reputation as one of the most versatile and reliable fighter aircraft in modern aviation history.
