History:
The YF-16 was developed in the early 1970s as part of the USAF’s Lightweight Fighter Program. First flown in 1974, the prototype demonstrated exceptional agility and advanced aerodynamics, including a frameless bubble canopy, side-stick controller, and relaxed static stability with fly-by-wire controls. These innovations set the standard for future fighter designs. The YF-16 ultimately won the competition against the Northrop YF-17, leading to mass production as the F-16 Fighting Falcon. Over 4,600 F-16s have since been built, serving in more than 25 air forces worldwide. The YF-16 prototype thus marked the beginning of one of the most successful and widely exported fighters in history.
